Rescue Dogs at Ground Zero
Authored by the AKC website Rescue workers at the site of the collapsed World Trade Center in New York have earned the respect and gratitude of all Americans for their tireless efforts on behalf of the victims of the September 11 attacks. Lt. Dan Donadio is in charge of one of the hardest_working units at Ground Zero_the New York City Police Department K_9 Unit. The smart, tough, and loyal dogs of the K_9 Unit, along with other Search and Rescue dogs from across the country, have been on call since the disaster, using their special abilities to locate victims in the rubble.
We have all been deeply affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. We have seen police, firemen, rescue people, and other citizens risk and sometimes lose their lives in trying to help their fellowmen. We don't know how we can adequately express our thanks for their efforts. We offer our heartfelt sympathy to all persons injured and killed during these disastrous events, and want the families and friends to know our thoughts and prayers are with them. These tragedies in New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania have left all of us looking for ways we can help, and the outpouring of support by the American public helps us focus on all of the good there is in the world. Overwhelming donations by customers The responses and generosity of our customers have been truly incredible. Calls from customers who wanted first aid kits and other health items sent to New York for the rescue dogs started coming in within hours of the disaster. As of 6 am on September 19, over 510 customers had donated a total of more than $56,149.16 worth of items. Some even called in and said, "Here is my credit card number. Please send $1,000 of items to New York _ whatever they need." Drs. Foster & Smith is providing 33% discounts for these relief orders, combining them in large boxes which include the names of the donors, and shipping them in large boxes by air. Support efforts by Drs. Foster and Smith With a combined effort of Federal Express and Prospect Aviation located near Pittsburgh, Drs. Foster and Smith was able to send 130 pair of dog boots to New York within two days of the disaster. Prospect Aviation was flying a patient from Mayo Clinic back to Pittsburgh and was able to make a short stop in Rhinelander WI to pick up the boots. From there, Federal Express got the boots to New York City by late Thursday night, September 13. These boots help protect the feet of the dogs who are walking on shattered glass and jagged metal. Since Thursday, Drs. Foster and Smith has donated another 500 pair of boots and a number of medical supplies. In honor of the brave and heroic members of New York's Fire and Police departments who selflessly gave their lives to help others in the aftermath of the World Trade Center tragedy, Drs. Foster & Smith has also contributed $5,000 to the Twin Towers Fund in the names of customers who generously purchased supplies from the company to donate to Search & Rescue dogs as well as pets affected by this horrific event. "There have been many examples of heroism in New York these past weeks," said Dr. Race Foster. "But nothing has touched our hearts and souls more deeply than the firemen and women and police officers who rushed into harm's way, giving their lives to save the lives of others. We've asked the Fund administrators to designate our $5,000 contribution to the families of those fallen heroes." Ways you can help: "Many pets in the New York City and Washington areas are stranded and relief efforts are being made to take care of them. The New York Center for Animal Care and Control (NYCACC) is too busy to take phone calls for information at this time. Please use their website at www.nycacc.org to find out more information on their organization and how you can help. You may call 1 (888) LOST_123 for reports of food and water needs for pets of evacuated residents from lower Manhattan and rescue workers from all 5 boroughs. Reports of unattended pets that belong to owners who cannot be located or who are prevented from caring for their animals will also be accepted. Support for the Canine Unit of the New York Police Department can be sent to: Police Foundation Canine Unit 61 Chamber St. New York NY 10007 (Note - Foster & Smith can be reached at 1-800-826-7206) A listing of other relief agencies accepting donations can be found at http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/US/Emergency_Information.
