The major intent of authoring this book was to give the reader everything they need to know to travel the Suwannee River and it's headwaters, the Okefenokee Swamp. The book also gives information on canoeing the southwestern part of the swamp. It also includes a history of the Okefenokee swamp written by Professor Chris Trowell of South Georgia College, Douglas, Georgia. Professor Trowell is one of the major historians of the Okefenokee.

The book includes, 2 Maps of the river, marked off in one mile tics, a map of all the springs on the river (with GPS numbers) put-in and take-out points, re-supply points, where you will and will not find good primitive river campsites, river distances and paddling times, information on commercial campgrounds, addresses and phone numbers of every place you might need to contact to set up your trip, including Outfitters on the river, a long distance river camping checklist to help you make certain you have everything you need without forgetting anything, Canoeing Safety guidelines for the experienced as well as the inexperienced, what to look for when buying a canoe for the first time, (also a paddle) and general "Dos and Don'ts of canoeing which apply to canoeing anywhere.  The book is in a easy reading "folksy" style, sprinkled with humor. You will find it excellent information and fun reading.
